Аннотация

Animal breeding hobbyists have been useful to science because they identify and isolate color coat mutations that geneticists can in turn use in their studies of the development and differentiation of color cells. This paper discusses a very interesting color mutant, the Japanese Galaxy, tracing its creation from back to a self-educated genetics hobbyist, Hoskiki Tsutsui. The paper discusses a constituent gene previously studied by Dr. Violet Phang, the snakeskin gene (the linked body and fin genes Ssb and Sst).
And it discusses a gene previously unknown to science, the Schimmelpfennig Platinum gene (Sc).
Through crossing experiments, the author determines that the combination of these two genes produces an intermediate phenotype, the Medusa. Incorporating the Grass (Gr, another gene unknown to science) gene into the Medusa through a crossover produces the Galaxy phenotype. Microscope studies of the snakeskin pattern in Galaxies and snakeskins reveals some parallels with similar studies made of the Zebrafish Danio.

Аннотация

The purpose of this research was to investigate karyotypes of six species of ornamental fish in Thailand, including Poecilia reticulata, P. wingei, P. latipinna, Xiphophorus helleri, X. maculatus and X. variatus. Chromosomes were prepared from gill epithelial tissues. The results revealed that all three species of Poecilia under study had the same diploid chromosome number of 46 while all three Xiphophorus species also possessed the same diploid chromosome number of 48. Their karyotypes were as follows. Both P. reticulata and P. wingei had 23 pairs of acrocentric chromosomes with arm number (NF) of 46. Poecilia latipinna on the other hand, had 1 pair of submetacentric, 8 pairs of subtelocentric and 14 pairs of acrocentric chromosomes, NF = 48. Xiphophorus helleri and X. variatus had 24 pairs of acrocentric chromosomes, NF = 48 while X. maculatus had 1 pair of metacentric and 23 pairs of acrocentric chromosomes, NF = 50. These cytogenetic data obtained can be applied for further studies in cytotaxonomy and evolutionary relationships of fishes.

Аннотация

Digestive tracts of wild guppies, Poeci1ia reticu1ata (Pisces, Poeci1iidae) contained mainly benthic algae and invertebrates. In the laboratory, guppies matured on diets consisting solely of Ch1oro¬ coccum (Chlorophyceae), Daphnia, or dried fish food, but rates were slowest on algae. Fish grazing benthic algae performed rapid pecks with jaws maximally protracted to cover a relatively large area. Pecks were performed in series at intervals of 0.55 s. Jaw movements re¬ quired 0.17 s, while substrate contact lasted 0.03 s. Ingestion/peck varied with fish size, sex and algal density. Males fed on lower densi¬ ties and ingested more per peck than females of similar weight. Inges¬ tion rates were high and showed no consistent daily pattern. Females had longer feeding bouts than males.

Poecilia reticulata is found in all kinds of water. Poecilia reticulata act as a biological controller by of mosquitoes larvae present in water. In household sewage most of the detergent constituting number of carbonates, phosphates, sulphates and chlorides get dissolved and it adversely affects the physiological activities of aquatic animals for e.g. fishes, molluscs, insects etc. Detergents cause hypertrophy and hyperplasia of the cell types and also fish oestrous cycle become irregular. Due to detergents eggs formation of Poecilia reticulata get reduced. Present study was done from the fishes collected from the Sangam Talao and Sarkari Talao present in the heart of Buldana city.

We tested the hypothesis that mate choice is responsible for countergradient variation in the sexual coloration of Trinidadian guppies (Poecilia reticulata). The nature of the countergradient pattern is that geographical variation in the carotenoid content of the orange spots of males is counterbalanced by genetic variation in drosopterin production, resulting in a relatively uniform pigment ratio. A female hue preference could produce this pattern, because hue is the axis of colour variation most directly affected by the pigment ratio. To test this hypothesis, we crossed two populations differing in drosopterin production and produced an F₂ generation with variable drosopterin levels. When the carotenoid content of the orange spots was held constant, female guppies preferred males with intermediate drosopterin levels. This shows that females do not simply prefer males with greater orange spot pigment content; instead, the ratio of the pigments also affects male attractiveness. To our knowledge, this is the first direct evidence for a hypothesized agent of countergradient sexual selection.

Аннотация

The culture of maintenance ornamental fish among Iranian people is developing every day. One of the most important factors in election aquarium fish is behavior of feeding. The feeding behavior of Guppy is poorly documented. In this experiment we study feeding behavior in P. reticulata by six treatments. Six aquariums with the same dimension were used and two points A & B with the maximum distance from each other were selected in each aquarium. In aquarium No.1 hand move with feeding in point A, in aquarium No.2 hand move without feeding in point A, in aquarium No.3 hand moves in point A and feeding in point B, in aquarium No.4 feeding without hand move in point B, in aquarium No.5 in semi dark conditions hand move with feeding in point A and finally in aquarium No.6 in darkness conditions hand move with feeding in point A were done. In aquarium No.1, 94% of fish moved to point A and in aquarium No.2 it was about 92%. In aquarium No.3, 95.5% of fish moved to point A and in Aquarium No.4, 74.5% of fish moved to point B. In aquarium No 5 and 6, 96% and 99.5% of fish moved and didn’t move to point A, respectively. Our results showed that this species is a visual feeder and a good aquarium fish for their feeding behavior.

Variation in static allometry, the power relationship between character size and body size among individuals at similar developmental stages, remains poorly understood. We tested whether predation or other ecological factors could affect static allometry by comparing the allometry between the caudal fin length and the body length in adult male guppies (Poecilia reticulata) among populations from different geographical areas, exposed to different predation pressures. Neither the allometric slopes nor the allometric elevations (intercept at constant slope) changed with predation pressure. However, populations from the Northern Range in Trinidad showed allometry with similar slopes but lower intercepts than populations from the Caroni and the Oropouche drainages. Because most of these populations are exposed to predation by the prawn Macrobrachium crenulatum, we speculated that the specific selection pressures exerted by this predator generated this change in relative caudal fin size, although effects of other environmental factors could not be ruled out. This study further suggests that the allometric elevation is more variable thanthe allometric slope.
